-EMPLOYMENT OF MINORS (BOG Pol. #49): Employment with West Virginia University and its Regional/Divisional Campuses is available to any qualified person who has reached eighteen (18) years of age. Employment of any person who is under eighteen (18) years of age is restricted. Prior to extending an offer to a prospective employee under eighteen (18) years of age, all hiring supervisors must contact the Division of Human Resources-Employment Services Unit in order to receive approval to proceed with the hire. Supervisors are ultimately responsible for adhering to the conditions of employing a minor, as outlined and communicated during the approval process.
-BACKGROUND CHECKS: All employees of the university who are in direct contact with minors will be background checked every 3 years. All individuals who are not employees of the university and who are in direct contact with a minor will be background checked every year.
-HIRING OF RELATIVES (Procedure 1.2): Employees may neither initiate nor participate in institutional decisions involving a direct benefit to an immediate family member. Such decisions include, but are not limited to: hiring, retention, promotion, wages, and leave requests. Student workers who are relatives are also subject to the provisions. Family member is defined as one of the following: relationships by blood -- parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, first cousin; and, relationships by marriage -- husband, wife, step-parent, stepchild, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, half-brother, half-sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece. Prior to an employment offer, the supervisor must sign and process a statement certifying that he/she is not hiring a relative.
